Now in the Philippines: Fashionary and Field Notes products

Whether you’re a fashionista, an avid scribbler or someone who simply appreciates quality writing tools, you’ll be happy to note that local online shopping site Avalon.ph now carries Fashionary and Field Notes products.

“While there are a lot of notebooks on the market, some people want something special. We cater to those who go against the mainstream,” shares Avalon.ph’s Jasper Ong.

Avalon.ph has a history of going against the flow. After all, Avalon.ph was established in the age of dial up Internet. Avalon.ph’s product offerings reflect its philosophy: the shop sells signed books, limited and first edition books, hard to find board games and specialty notebooks. The online shopping site offers customers convenient payment methods: bank deposit, PayPal or mobile cash transfers as well as direct shipping for a minimal fee.

Fashionably yours

ImageFashionary is the first of its kind: it is a sketchbook created for designers, stylists and fashion enthusiasts. Its pages are filled with connect the dots body templates. The templates make it easier to draw human figures. It comes in menswear and women’s wear editions and in two sizes: A5 and A4.

The name “Fashionary” is a play on the words fashion, diary and dictionary. With Fashionary, you can record fashion inspirations, understand industry jargon with its detailed guides and avoid damaging precious outfits by learning to read laundry labels via its care instructions chart. Fashionary also has calendar of catwalk events.

“Even if you’re not a designer or stylist, you can use Fashionary to confidently plan your outfits. Its latest edition has an extensive guide on bags, underwear, accessories and even fabrics,” explains Ong. “The men’s wear edition has pages on jackets, trousers, neckties, shoes and boots.”

Ong adds that because the body templates are barely visible, Fashionary can also be used as a notebook and daily planner companion.

The need for speed

According to the Fashionary website, Fashionary “aims to bring speed to professional fashion designers and fellow fashionista.” Penter Yip, a fashion and graphic designer based in Hong Kong, created Fashionary in 2009.

The concept of having a notebook filled easy to use, blended figure templates stemmed from Yip’s experience during his fashion studies at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom.

UK-based online magazine, We Heart, reports that Fashionary was “born from the frustration of sketching out proportioned human figures allowing designers and students to sketch out their ideas, trouble free, wherever they may be.”

Fashionary has the technical aspects of fashion down to pat. It has guides for body measurement, seams, and stitches. It has a fabric dictionary, a brand index and production-friendly spec sheets as well. Fashionary also has a typography guide to help designers present their work effectively.

Recently, Fashionary launched its Memo Pad version. The memo pads are “sticky templates”. Fashionary templates are printed on the memo pads, enabling designers to stick their sketches onto moodboards. Each Memo Pad has a helpful spec sheet at the back. The Memo Pad comes in six versions: top, bottom and figure versions for men and women’s apparel.

Notebooks for the adventurerImageWhat do Neil Gaiman, Warren Ellis and William Gibson have in common? Aside from being bestselling authors, they are Field Notes users.

Field Notes takes inspiration from turn of the century, classic pocket ledgers and farm notebooks. Field Notes are designed to be durable. The hardy pocket notebooks measure 3 ½ by 5 ½ inches and come in packs of three.

“Field Notes are made for people who are always on the go, who want to jot down thoughts as they explore. The size of Field Notes, makes it ideal for putting in your back pocket. It gives you just enough writing space without becoming too bulky to carry around comfortably,” shares Ong.

The first line of Field Notes used graph paper. Today, Field Notes has ruled, plain and mixed paper (a combination of graph, ruled and plain in one 3-pack) variants as well. Aside from its iconic plain brown cover, Field Notes now comes in limited edition Field Notes Colors and seasonal designs. Field Notes also has an 80-page Steno Book.

Printed in the back cover of every Field Notes product is a 5-inch ruler and a witty list on the many ways you can use your notebooks. The front cover has a space for contact details. It also has space for noting when and where you started and ended using a notebook.
